Today, in an effort to say I hiked on average every month of the year. 12 days of hiking...12 months. I decided to hike Mt. Whiteface. It's a mountain I've hiked before. It's a 4,000 footer too.
Upon leaving the Ferncroft parking lot I noticed this house for sale. If I was nearing retirement I would hop on it in a second.
I decided to hit the Tom Wiggin trail on the way up. The sign at the beginning says "Not Recommended, Steep and Loose". I wanted to redline the trail though so figured now was as good a time as any. The trail did not disappoint, it was steep and loose and rough and the stream crossing was very difficult but I made it up dry. Partly thanks to these stairs.
The view from the South Ledge on Whiteface.
Upon gaining the summit, I found these... I think they are bear tracks. I found 4 separate sets over about a mile of the ridge walk over to Mt. Passaconaway. I did not summit Passaconaway. I did however walk the ridge over to it so I could avoid going down the Whiteface ledges.
All in all a great day. 9.9 miles, and 3,300 feet of elevation gain. I'm now at 102.3 miles for the year and have hit my 100 mile goal.
