We arrived at the trailhead, which is unplowed in winter and parked along the side of the road to boot up. It was a bit cold so Shelby had on a bunch of layers. I only had my outer shell and a base wicking layer. Looking back I should have had a fleece on as well, but it wasn't all that bad.
We started on up the trail and found trail-breaking quite fun. The snow was light so it took very little effort. Here's a picture of Shelby's first time snowshoeing.
Before we knew it, we were at the top. There is a fairly steep section just before the summit which was a little slick and it also had some drifting snow which was fun to plow through. Shelby didn't have a problem with the steep secion at all which was good because in the White Mountains where I plan on bringing her next there are a lot of steep sections. Here's a picture of Shelby at an outlook near the summit. On a clear day you can see Chocoroua and Mt. Washington from here. Not right now though.
We then proceded down and found a trail that was supposed to lead us back to the car. Turns out we took the wrong trail and we decided to see where the trail went. The trail led to Bauneg Beg Hill Road in North Berwick and the sign said that it led to Fox Farm Hill Road. I guess we get to hike this mountain twice today. We headed on back up to the summit and followed our tracks all the way back to the car. The detour added about 1.2 miles to our day.
On the way back through we stopped at the summit really quick and could actually see Chocoroua. Washington was not visible and I did not get a picture because the sun was starting to go down and we wanted to get home to get warm. Overall, Shelby had a good time and even said it was more fun than hiking in the summer. We'll see what she has to say when the hike is longer.
