Kickstarter Campaigns

Today, I donated to a Kickstarter Campaign.  I only did it once before and I loved the product that came out of it.  This product is called Shirt Stays by Fancyboy & Co.  Basically the idea is it is a reverse suspender.  You clip it to your shirt and then to your socks under your pants and it keeps your shirt from coming un-tucked throughout the day.  I hate the bagginess that comes from shirts that are coming loose every single time you reach for something or sit down.  I think that this product is fantastic and it’s already well over 100% funded so I know I’ll be getting a pair.  I donated $20 and hope to get a set of the shirt stays if the project is funded.

With this item complete, I have now completed 6 of my 101 items.  I am also about half way done the star wars movies, half way done seeing 10 classic movies I have never seen and I have finished 1 classic book I had not previously read.  I’ve also read a total of 4 books in the month of December and I have read almost 80 bible verses putting me well on track for completion on that one.

I’ve pretty much set the budget for 2016 as well so will be knocking that item off the list soon.

I’m even planning a hike for later this week and into next week putting me on track for those goals as well.  I can feel that 2016 is going to be a great year.

Swearing Update

Wow, after a while of trying... not, I've gone almost a whole day without swearing.  Little things have thrown me off the past few days but today was great.  I had an awesome time playing with my son and watching the second of the released to video star wars movies.  I'm making progress on all of my goals and in January my wife and I have committed ourselves to doing the Whole 30 program.  I'm refusing to call it a diet.  I need it after this holiday season like 90% of Americans likely do.  We've already started planning meals and have both read the book.

I've had 4 days off of work including today and I work Monday - Wednesday this week and get 4 more days off from Thursday through Sunday.  I'm planning on going hiking Thursday if the weather holds out.  I'm really enjoying picking away at the 101 in 1001 goals.  They are stretch goals (sort of) but they are manageable in small quantities.

I'd like to take this moment to plug my favorite item that I purchased in 2015.  It's a Coffee Press.  It's made by GSI and I've been using it for about 2 months every day.  I pay about a quarter per mug (15 oz) of coffee now and it is better coffee than the K-cups or other brands out there that are quickie brewed.  It takes a few minutes for a good cup but it's well worth the wait and cheaper than going out to buy it.  Due to the whole 30 program in January I will be drinking it black.  I just add a 1/2 oz of half and half now so the transition won't be bad.  Half the time I forget anyway.

Swearing

Ok, so... I'll start off by saying that I swear... a lot.  I always thought that I swore quite a bit but never really realized how much.  As part of my challenge over the next 900 something days, I thought it would be fitting to go one full week without swearing.  I decided to start yesterday.

Yesterday, I woke up and went to work as normal.  I was groggy in the morning and had a good morning.  Then, my employees came in to the office at the end of a long day in the field and I sat around and chit chatted with them for a bit.  Oopsie.  I let a quick little swear out.  SHIT.  I didn't mean to do it, it just happened.  I had consciously watched my mouth the entire day.

Today, day 2.  I woke up 2 minutes before my 5AM alarm.  Time to start day 1 off on the right foot right?  I didn't even think about my plan for the day to not swear.  It was the first morning that I woke up feeling awake since the time change in November.  For some reason I always have a hard time adjusting.  I had a plan to go to a remote office today so I woke up early, assigned work from home and got on the road to leave.

I usually make coffee at the office.  I have a commuter french press which I use to make my own good coffee at work.  The K-cup machine at work makes weak coffee and costs $1 for cheap nasty coffee.  I have a K-cup machine at home and that costs about .75 cents for the same crappy coffee.

Today, I made my coffee at home using the K-cup machine and didn't even try it until I was in the truck about 10 minutes down the road.  I took a quick swig as I was driving down the road and muttered to myself "shit this coffee's terrible." Day 1 down the drain again.  There's always tomorrow right?

Vision

As part of my 101 in 1001 challenge, I had down to get my vision checked.  Last week I made an appointment and they got me in immediately.  I couldn't believe that they were able to get me a next day appointment.  The appointment went well and I still have 20/15 vision in both eyes.  They dilated my eyes and took pictures and all is well.  Now, I'm 5 items of my 101 completed.

I haven't been able to blog much with work and the holidays being so busy.  I went on a trip to New York last week for work.  2 days in a car with 4 co-workers.  We had fun and were very productive.

Update

Update on the goals project.

In the past week, I have kept up with the flossing.  I'm at 14 days for the project but actually 35 days in a row now.  Only 48 more days and I can cross this one off the list.

I've read two books.  One was a philosophy book called The Inner Consciousness how to awaken and direct it by Swami Prakashananda.  It was marketed as a book but was only 42 pages.  Kindle's are good into tricking you like that.  It was interesting though so I'm going to count it.

I also read She Can Scream by Melinda Leigh.  Good book.  Sometimes it's nice to get lost in a book that doesn't get you thinking much about life.  Just a good murder book with romance tied in.

I've also purchased all new Underwear and started Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

I've even read about 20 more bible verses.  Only about 260 or so to go.

For some reason, this blog has had more page hits than usual.  About 40 in the past week.  Not bad considering I didn't even really post anything.

The next few weeks are going to be busy with birthdays and Christmas and the new year.  Here's to a productive few weeks.

Santa's Village

So, not on the 101 tasks to complete in 1,001 days is a visit to Santa's Village.  My wife and I took Max there for a day trip and met my sister, her husband and their two kids.  The forecast called for a high of 47 degrees.  I don't think it even hit 33 degrees.  We were freezing all day but had a good time.  We left the house at about 7:30 and didn't get back until about 7:30 PM.  A 12 hour day.

Onto the 101 tasks, I started Risky Business.  It's on Netflix and and I've never seen it before.  All I can say is... Rebecca De Mornay wow.  I'm hoping to finish it in the next few days.  It'll help knock some items off the list.

Whiteface 12/4/2015

Today, in an effort to say I hiked on average every month of the year.  12 days of hiking...12 months.  I decided to hike Mt. Whiteface.  It's a mountain I've hiked before.  It's a 4,000 footer too.

Upon leaving the Ferncroft parking lot I noticed this house for sale.  If I was nearing retirement I would hop on it in a second.

I decided to hit the Tom Wiggin trail on the way up.  The sign at the beginning says "Not Recommended, Steep and Loose".  I wanted to redline the trail though so figured now was as good a time as any.  The trail did not disappoint, it was steep and loose and rough and the stream crossing was very difficult but I made it up dry.  Partly thanks to these stairs.

The view from the South Ledge on Whiteface.

Upon gaining the summit, I found these... I think they are bear tracks.  I found 4 separate sets over about a mile of the ridge walk over to Mt. Passaconaway.  I did not summit Passaconaway.  I did however walk the ridge over to it so I could avoid going down the Whiteface ledges.

All in all a great day.  9.9 miles, and 3,300 feet of elevation gain.  I'm now at 102.3 miles for the year and have hit my 100 mile goal.

Day 3 - 3 down 98 to go of the 101 in 1,001 challenge

Today I finished my Wikipedia learning so I can now say I have completed 3 items off the list.  I also watched Serpico.  An Al pacino movie from the early 1970's.  I thought the movie was great.  It's about a straight laced cop in New York City who has a lot of issues with the corruptness of multiple precincts and departments.  I thought the movie was fantastic.

I have a pre-planned vacation day for tomorrow so will be hitting the mountains for a hike somewhere.  I had set a goal this year to hike 100 miles (something I had not done since 2009 before mys on was born).  I have 7.6 miles to go so I plan on hiking at least that far.  I'll throw a trip report up when I'm back.

Hitchcock Bay, Saskatchewan is a small hamlet in Canada with a population under 20.  That's all there is on that one.

Grumman (LIRR Station) is a small train station for those employees who worked at Grumman Aviation.  It no longer exists but will live forever on the internet.

Jan Ertsborn is an interesting feller.  He's apparently still alive and would be 71 years old.  He was a member of the Swedish Liberal People's Party.  He held political office and once called for bestiality to be illegal.

List of Cagney and Lacey episodes was an article I definately didn't need to read.  There were 7 seasons of Cagney and Lacey though.  It must have been a good show.  I've heard of it but didn't recognize one name from the cast list.

I Can't Reach Her Anymore was a country song about attempted re-kindled relationships.

50 Questions that will free your mind

Today, one of my goals is to answer the “50 questions that will free your mind”.
My answers are below.  I wouldn’t say this changed me, but it does give a bit of perspective.
  1. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?  40 yuck
  2. Which is worse, failing or never trying? Never Trying
  3. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do? Fear of failure, lack of resources.
  4. When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done? Hell no
  5. What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world? Religion.  Don’t know how or what needs changing but the radicals are causing an awful lot of headaches.
  6. If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich? Being in nature doing something... anything
  7. Are you doing what you believe in, or are you settling for what you are doing? Settling for sure
  8. If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently? I’d have bought a whitewater raft and been a Dirt Bag Paddler.
  9. To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken? Who knows.  I sees my opportunities and I takes em’.
  10. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?  Doing the right things.
  11. You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire.  They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend.  The criticism is distasteful and unjustified.  What do you do? Take a deep breath, and then justify that person.
  12. If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?  Climb a Mountain.
  13. Would you break the law to save a loved one? Yes sir!
  14. Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity? I’m a good judge of character.  Nope.
  15. What’s something you know you do differently than most people? Stupid people don’t know that they are stupid.  I think I’m pretty smart.  I see the big picture a lot.
  16. How come the things that make you happy don’t make everyone happy?  That’s the essence of being human.
  17. What one thing have you not done that you really want to do?  What’s holding you back? Thru-Hike the Appalachian trail.  Job, Family obligations.
  18. Are you holding onto something you need to let go of? My baseball cards and my electric guitar.  See task number 59 & 60.
  19. If you had to move to a state or country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why?  Colorado.  The hiking there from what I hear is incredible.
  20. Do you push the elevator button more than once?  Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster? Yes and No, just don’t believe technology always works the first time.
  21. Would you rather be a worried genius or a joyful simpleton? I wish I was a joyful simpleton
  22. Why are you, you?  It’s complicated.
  23. Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend? At times.
  24. Which is worse, when a good friend moves away, or losing touch with a good friend who lives right near you?  When a good friend moves away.  I’m kinda sick of that.
  25. What are you most grateful for? My son.
  26. Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never be able to make new ones?  Never be able to make new ones.
  27. Is it possible to know the truth without challenging it first? Sometimes.  I guarantee the apple on my desk is an apple.
  28. Has your greatest fear ever come true? Nope... I’m still here.
  29. Do you remember that time 5 years ago when you were extremely upset?  Does it really matter now?  Yes, it shaped me a bit for the better.
  30. What is your happiest childhood memory?  What makes it so special? Going on a Canoe trip around “The Bow”.  I was 10.  My dad was sick and brought me anyway.  He could have cancelled and had a great excuse but didn’t.  I remember paddling across a very rough lake and making it feeling like something was accomplished.
  31. At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive? Guided Whitewater again for the first time in nearly a decade.  It was great.
  32. If not now, then when?  Never
  33. If you haven’t achieved it yet, what do you have to lose? Everything?
  34. Have you ever been with someone, said nothing, and walked away feeling like you just had the best conversation ever? Yes
  35. Why do religions that support love cause so many wars? Because you’re wrong and I’m right.
  36. Is it possible to know, without a doubt, what is good and what is evil? Sometimes yes.
  37. If you just won a million dollars, would you quit your job? No, I would continue to do it and then find another job that affords me a bit more free time.
  38. Would you rather have less work to do, or more work you actually enjoy doing? More work I actually enjoy doing.
  39. Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before?  Yeap, that’s why I’ll probably forget it.
  40. When was the last time you marched into the dark with only the soft glow of an idea you strongly believed in? Probably when I started backpacking.  I did some research and went alone.  I knew I wanted to do it but wasn’t sure why.  It was great.
  41. If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow, who would you visit today? I have two approaches here.  Meet someone today that will die tomorrow that wouldn’t have died had I never met them today.  (Kim Jong-un)  Or I could visit someone I truly love...My son.  I would pick him up from school and go on a hike with him.
  42. Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous? No thanks
  43. What is the difference between being alive and truly living? Experiences
  44. When is it time to stop calculating risk and rewards, and just go ahead and do what you know is right? Life or Death situations to those I love
  45. If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake? Sometimes mistakes hurt physically or emotionally.
  46. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?  I’d stop shaving altogether!!
  47. When was the last time you noticed the sound of your own breathing?  A few nights ago when I was snoring...oops.  I woke myself up.
  48. What do you love?  Have any of your recent actions openly expressed this love? I love hiking.  Yes, I’ve made it evident to those around me that I love it.
  49. In 5 years from now, will you remember what you did yesterday?  What about the day before that?  Or the day before that? Yesterday I started the 101 in 1,001.  I think I’ll remember.  The day before that I don’t even remember now but the day before that was pretty good.  I’ll try to make more memories.
  50. Decisions are being made right now.  The question is:  Are you making them for yourself, or are you letting others make them for you? Myself.  I will allow input but the decision is mine.

Now that you know my answers, what do you think?  I'm thinking that I have a lot of work to do to be epic.

Day 2 of 1,001

Today is day 2 of the 101 tasks in 1,001 days challenge.

So... I came up with a few quotes for the list and actually completed it so I can say that I have completed one task.  I'll be posting the quotes tomorrow.

I also visited some Wikipedia Articles to knock half of another task off the list.

Jelgave Municipality is a town in Latvia.  It was formed in 2009 and has over 27,000 residents. Not much else to say on this one.

Don't ask me why my first two articles were about towns but Chardon Township, Geauga County, Ohio was my second article.  It was a bit longer than the first.  I found the shape of Geauga County a bit odd.  16 nearly identicle perfect square sized towns in a 4 x 4 grid would have been nice, except  they took one town and made it a different shape...I wonder why.  Joe Jurevicius who was a Wide Receiver in the NFL lives here.

Joachim Ammena van Plettenberg remarkably shares my birthday only about 250 years earlier than me.  He was formerly the governor of Capetown.  As any governor, it seems he did some good things and some not so good things.  Cool to read a bit of history that's far enough back for Capetown to be owned by a company and not necessarily a country.

The next article was regarding the Holy Cross Hospital (Fort Lauderdale).  It is a 557 bed Catholic hospital.  It was founded in 1955.

In an effort to get a head start, I decided on a 5th article for today marking this task halway complete.  I lucked out with Walter Barbare.  He was a third baseman and shortstop who played for the Cleveland Indians, my beloved Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Braves.  He played 500 games and hit a grand total of 1 home run.  He was a .260 hitter and had 156 RBI's.  He also apparently was an excellent fielder and had a strong arm.  Post his playing career, he managed and umpired in the Minor Leagues.

Lastly, I watched Atlantic City which was nominated for an Oscar for Best picture back in 1982.  It was remarkably free with my Amazon Prime subscription.  The movie started out with Susan Sarandon taking a lemon bath nearly topless.  It was an interesting movie but I found it kind of long.

Day 1 of 1,001

Today is day 1 of my 101 in 1,001 challenge.  Per my last post, I have 101 challenges/tasks to undertake in the next 1,001 days.  There's no doubt in my mind I can complete them, but being a list person and an ambitious one, I am going to get a head start this month.  Basically, I have to complete about 3 tasks per month.  Some tasks take an entire month or even more so to get started I should have at least one difficult thing.

As of today, I have 0 of 101 tasks completed.

Here's what I am going to concentrate on for December.

3.  Find a quote for every item on the list.
Why not start here.  "I love the ritual of drawing up lists, and there's something wonderfully satisfying about ticking tasks off."  - Shaida Kazie Ali

7.  Floss every day for 2 months.
I want to do this and here's why.  I recently chipped a tooth, turns out I needed a crown.  I went in for the crown and was told oopsie, you need a root canal.  Now I'm all paranoid as I floss um.   never.  Since my appointment I have been flossing daily, no exceptions.  I'm currently on day 22 of flossing every day but for this challenge, it's day 1.  Here's hoping I can sustain this through January.

26.  Hike on average at least one day per month.
I obviously cannot finish this this month but I can at least get started.  With a little luck, I may be able to cross off a Maine 4000' peak too.  We'll see what the weather does.  I have actually 2 days scheduled off to go hiking  December 4th and December 31st.  Here's hoping one of those days pans out.

66.  Finish reading the bible.
I started reading the bible in 2013.  I'm about 75% of the way through it.  I do well at some periods of time and then I will stop reading for 2 months and pick it up again.  I just want to get this over with.

67.  Read 10 random Wikipedia pages
It's always good to learn something knew.
